When you are using a faux leather bag, the faux leather especially the fringe section starts to peel off, doesn’t it? I have a favorite bag with faux leather peeling off.

Normally, I would just throw it away, but the rest of the bag is still usable, so I still want to use it. But I didn’t want to take up much of my time by repairing it, so I googled to see if I could do it easily myself, and found some useful goods!

I was not really sure if I can successfully repair it, but I’ve decided to give it a try.

The state of the tattered, peeling faux leather bag before repair

The faux leather bag I’m repairing is a Patrick Cox Tote Bag, which costs around 20,000 JPY (about US$200). The appearance of the bag seems to be a pretty usable condition from my judgment.

But if you look closer, you can see that the faux leather on the edge is actually in such awful condition…It’s kind of embarrassing to use the bag as it is.

After some research, I found out that faux leather is supposed to last only a few years even if you use it normal way.  It’s true that I’ve had a number of faux leather bags where various parts have peeled off with few usages.

Applying a faux leather repair tape to fix the peeled section

To repair the peeled leather, I used CAPTAIN’s “Synthetic Leather Repair Tape, Fine 25mm x 1m,” which is a strong adhesive type.  This tape is very easy to use for repairing a long, thin handle of bags, umbrellas, or the like.

The 25mm width type comes in three colors: black, dark brown, and translucent. This time, I chose the black color because the part to be repaired is black.

When you open the package, you see a piece of black tape that is flimsy like shown in the below image. I was a little skeptical when I first saw this tape, and I had a feeling that it might not succeed. Well, let’s see what happens…

Steps to repair the peeling faux leather of the bag with the repair tape

The edge of the peeling bag is about 5 mm wide, but the tape I purchased is 2.5 cm wide. In that case, you just have to cut the tape with scissors to a width of about 1 cm to match the edge of the bag (5mm x 2 (front and back)).

Then, neatly attach the tape to the edge of the bag. The rear of the faux leather tape is firm glue, so you just have to peel off the backing paper and stick the tape on the edge of the bag.

Note that if the area to be taped is wet, dusty, or greasy, the adhesive strength will weaken, so be sure to check and dry the area beforehand!

The image above shows the tape applied around the front part of the bag.  The tape stretches a lot more than I expected, so it was very easy to apply and attach. I guess faux leather is naturally stretchy if I am correct.

Also, even after peeling off the tape several times to adjust and reattaching it, the adhesion did not degrade at all.

How does it look? Hmmm… I must admit, it looks pretty good!

I proudly showed it to some of my friends, and they complimented me, saying, “I can’t tell if it’s been reapplied at all! All of them were amazed at how quickly and easily the peeled section was repaired.

It took me about five minutes from the time I cut the tape into 1cm pieces with scissors to the time I finished applying it, even though I had been sitting on it for weeks before I bought the tape and started applying it.

In fact, I was so lazy that I didn’t even bother to cut the tape into 1cm pieces and just cut it by eye, but I was surprised at how quickly it was done.

I was surprised at how quickly I was able to complete the project. With this 1 meter long tape, I was able to cover the entire area around the edge of the bag with just one piece of tape.

This captain’s faux leather repair tape costs only around 500 Japanese yen, a mere one coin. Considering the price of the original bag, it was a good decision to repair it instead of throwing it away.

It’s really easy to do, so if it’s your favorite bag (or even though it’s not your favorite but if it’s an expensive bag), it’s worth a try before you throw it away!

Repairing my favorite backpack with the faux leather part peeled off

I was so pleased with how easy it was to repair, that I decided to repair another bag.

This backpack is quite old, but I really like it because it’s so easy to use and I just couldn’t throw it away, and if possible, I want to use it again!

However, just like the black bag I mentioned earlier, the brown faux leather part of this backpack is peeled off and it’s falling apart. I really don’t know why faux leather peels off like this…

With this backpack, the surface of the faux leather part is peeling off, so it is not usable as it is…  So, the next step is to use a repair sheet for the faux leather in a dark brown color.

This is the same dark brown version of the CAPTAIN “Synthetic Leather Repair Tape 11cm x 20cm”. The dark brown one is 11cm x 20cm in size.

I don’t know if it’s because of the wide width, but the name of this one is “faux leather repair sheet” instead of tape. All you have to do is cut the tape into 1cm pieces and stick them on.

Well, this repair tape is a civilized tool. The best thing about the tape (or sheet) is that it stretches well.

Thanks to its elasticity, you can apply it to anything, even curved areas, even if dexterity is not your strong suit. You can even have your child do it for you. I think it’s a fun crafty way to fix things for them!

The 11cm can be used for a wider area of peeling. In that case, cut a larger piece than the area to be repaired and round the corners to prevent peeling.

When applying the tape to uneven surfaces such as the bottom of a bag, it is recommended to press down the tape (sheet) well after applying it to increase the adhesive strength.

I see. Oh, but the bag I want to repair is pink…too bad.

If you want to repair a color that is not on the repair sheet, you can buy a nail polish similar to your bag at a hundred-yen store (or dollar store).

Next, apply the nail polish to the peeling area and let it dry well.

Then, cut a piece of the translucent colored tape from the Captain’s Synthetic Leather Repair Sheet, and stick it on top.

If you just apply nail polish, it may look good at first but it will eventually peel off again, so the key is to apply the repair sheet over it.

In short, you can use nail polish to repair the color and texture, and then reinforce it with the repair sheet.

Now you don’t have to throw away any bag of any color anymore!

The “No-Poo” method, where you wash your hair only with water, has been gaining attention recently, with many minimalists and health-conscious people adopting this approach around the world. Some people may suffer from allergy or atopic dermatitis and want to improve their skin condition by not using shampoo since shampoo uses various petrochemicals and synthetic additives.

It’s been about 10 years since I started adopting the No-Poo method and also washing my face without using any soap.

It all started when I was suffering from atopic dermatitis, which made my face and body red and itchy no matter what I used.

But when I started washing my face and body without soap, my skin condition improved dramatically, and I no longer had redness or rashes on my face or body. After that, I started reading books and seriously researching and practicing so-called skin fasting (no-soap and no-cosmetics). And, I naturally learned about the “No-Poo” method as well.

I have to admit that there were many twists and turns before succeeding in the no-shampoo process, with some failures where I started using shampoo again.

As a result of trying various methods, I have now settled down to combining the No-Poo and occasional shampoo for my hair and so-called skin fasting by washing my face with just water.

The effects of No-Poo on the hair and how to do it

In Japan, washing one’s hair without shampoo is called “Yu-Shan,” where “Yu” stands for hot water and “Shan” stands for shampoo, but it seems “No-Poo” is a popular name in English.

First of all, let me introduce you to the positive effects of the “No-Poo” method. Let’s take a look at some of the benefits.

What are the Benefits of No-Poo?

Your hair condition gets better and better

As you get older, your hair may gradually lose its texture. Still, by washing your hair with just lukewarm water instead of using shampoo, your hair will absorb nutrients, which will gradually change the quality of your hair.

The detergency of shampoo is actually as strong as that of cloth detergent. So if you wash your hair with shampoo that contains surfactants with a strong cleaning effect, all the sebum on your head will be washed away, and you will end up lacking sebum.

If you don’t brush your hair properly before washing it, there is a big chance that you will fail. Be sure to brush your hair carefully just before washing it to remove excess sebum from your scalp, which can cause stickiness, odor, and itching.

At first, brush your scalp more than 100 times from various directions. Especially when you are just starting the No-Poo, it is recommended to brush your hair before washing and several times during the day to reduce stickiness.

Plastic hairbrushes are fine to use. But both Dr. Utsugi, the founder of the Kitasato Institute Hospital Center for Aesthetic Medicine, and Dr. Asako Yamaguchi, a dermatologist, explain in their books that it is better to use a hairbrush with animal hair, such as boar bristle. It is because a bristle brush is easier to remove dirt and excessive oil.

They both recommended a British hairbrush called “Mason Pearson.” This brush is expensive, but the bristles are soft, so it doesn’t hurt your hair or scalp, and just brushing it makes your hair shine.

Mason Pearson brushes are expensive, but a boar bristle/plastic mix and a small portable type are cheaper than boar bristle brushes.

Of course, you can also find pig-hair hairbrushes other than Mason Pearson, so you can use the brush that suits you best.

We had to buy two brushes for myself and my husband Ken, and Mason Pearson was beyond our budget, so we googled and decided to go with the more affordable and popular “AVEDA paddle brush.”

I like this brush because it is suitable for massaging my scalp. If it gets dirty, just soak it in soap solution and let it dry overnight. However, I would still wish to use the Mason Pearson brush sometime in the future.

In the winter, it’s difficult to wash your hair at 38 degC because it’s a bit cold for washing hair, but if possible, 38 degC is the best temperature.

This is because 38 degC is the right temperature to wash away excess sebum, and if the temperature is higher than that, it will wash away the necessary sebum on your skin, and then excess sebum will be produced.

The sebum protects your hair by coating it, but excess sebum can also cause odor. Therefore, when washing hair without shampoo, one must be careful not to produce too much sebum.

When washing your hair with the No-Poo, be mindful of how to use your fingers.

Wash your scalp by gently stroking it with your fingers. When washing your hair with the No-Poo, be careful not to use your nails. It is good to wash your scalp as if you were smoothing tofu bean curd.

Dr. Utsugi indeed recommends drying hair naturally, not with a hairdryer.

But if you do that, I think you might catch a cold. That is why I use a hairdryer to dry my hair, even when I wash my hair without shampoo.

However, be careful about the temperature of the hairdryer, and when using hot air, keep it away from the hair and do not concentrate it in one place.

Then, dry slowly, alternating hot and cold air. It is recommended that you dry your hair from the roots first so that it dries faster.

Frequently asked questions about the No-Poo

There are times when you get frustrated with facing various problems when washing your hair with the No-Poo method.

Here, we will cover some of the common issues and questions.

Q&A: I have dandruff when I wash my hair with the No-Poo, and I’m worried about what other people might think of me.

Some people may experience fine dandruff at the beginning when they start washing their hair without shampoo. However, it seems how fast your hair returns to its normal state would depend on how strong cleaning shampoo you have used before.

But actually, dandruff is a sign that the condition of your scalp is getting better. As the condition of your scalp improves and your metabolism increases, dead skin cells start to peel off and become dandruff. However, in most cases, dandruff will diminish after a while and eventually disappear almost completely.

According to Dr. Utsugi’s book, if you are worried about dandruff, you can put a very thin layer of Vaseline on your scalp to make it go away.

Perhaps because I have atopic dermatitis and dry skin, I had some dandruff at first, but it soon subsided. It may be that different people have different points of concern.

Q&A: I can’t stand the stickiness of my scalp when while applying the No-Poo

I think this is something that all people who have started using the No-Poo method would go through. Your sebaceous line is not functioning properly because of all the strong shampoos you’ve been using, and the sebaceous glands are trying to normalize and produce too much sebum.

However, once the sebaceous glands normalize, the stickiness of your scalp will disappear, and the scalp will become smooth, so you just have to be patient for a while. After about three weeks, the amount of sebum produced will start to decrease.

Brushing your hair not only right before washing your hair but also regularly will help prevent stickiness, odor, and itchiness, as well as make your hair shinier.

If the function of the sebaceous glands is fragile, the oil may harden at the roots of the hair and make it look terrible. Also, the stronger the shampoo you use, the stickier it may become at first.

When we first started the No-Poo, we thought, “What the heck, there’s no problem,” but after about five days, we suddenly felt our hair harden due to sebum production. This is the point where I completely failed at first (laughs).

However, since I am atopic and only able to use gentle shampoos, since Ken also used the same shampoo, the sebum did not harden that badly for us.

If you start the method during a vacation period when you don’t have to go out, you can manage to succeed without failing.

If you have no other way but to go out during that time, you can tie your hair up to cover it up if you are a woman, or if you are a man, you can put on a little wax to make any stickiness looks like the wax.

Also, if you can’t really stand it, I recommend using the petite No-Poo method to mix the No-Poo and shampooing that we sometimes do at home, although it slows down the normalization of sebum.

Q&A: I’m worried about the smell when I use the No-Poo!

This is the biggest problem when we use the method. We sometimes use petite No-Poo in our house because we are worried about the smell of our hair. It’s not so bad in the winter, but I’m worried that I would smell bad if I use No-Poo all the time…

Actually, it doesn’t smell that much when we smell each other, and theoretically, according to Dr. Utsugi, the dirt is removed by the No-Poo just the same as when you shampoo.

If you don’t need to go out much, such as telecommuting, I recommend that you apply a full No-Poo to normalize the sebaceous glands.

But I just can’t stand the smell!

If that’s the case, instead of getting frustrated, please use the petite No-Poo by mixing the No-Poo and shampooing.

This is gentler on your scalp than going back to shampooing altogether. In any case, after four to five months of not shampooing, the amount of sebum will decrease, the sebaceous glands will become smaller, and the smell will not be so bothersome.

I will explain the petite No-Poo method in detail later on.

Q&A: My scalp becomes itchy when washing hair with the No-Poo

Itching has never occurred in my family, but it seems itchiness occurs either because a lot of sebum is secreted at first or because the sebum in the scalp is not appropriately excreted.

When a lot of sebum is produced and exposed to the air, it oxidizes into lipid peroxide, irritating the scalp, causing inflammation and itching.

Itching can also occur if you do not gently rub your scalp enough when washing your hair with the No-Poo. In such cases, brushing your scalp carefully and gently every day to ensure that the sebum is adequately excreted will help.

Also, it seems the itchiness will subside after about a month.

Q&A: How often should I wash my hair with the No-Poo?

If you don’t need to go out much, such as telecommuting, I recommend that you apply a full No-Poo to normalize the sebaceous glands. Since sebum is produced every day, it is better to wash your hair every day to keep your scalp clean, especially at first.

As I explained in the section on itching above, if you don’t wash your hair every day, the sebum on your scalp will not be adequately excreted, and the sebum produced in large quantities will oxidize when exposed to air.

So, I would definitely recommend that you wash your hair with the No-Poo every day, especially in the beginning.

Q&A: How does the No-Poo help for thinner hair?

I mentioned earlier that shampoo has a cleaning power comparable to bathroom detergent. If you wash your hair every day with such a strong detergent, your hair will usually start thinning.

Therefore, many people say that their thinned-out hair has grown more when the No-Poo is applied.

However, in my family, we both naturally have a lot of hair, so I am not sure about the No-Poo effect for that purpose.

Q&A: I sometimes hear that washing your hair without shampoo can cause baldness.

However, as I explained earlier in the section on thinning hair, the opposite is true, and the No-Poo is more like to mitigate baldness.

Q&A: Is it true that No-Poo increases hair loss?

This is not true and opposite as well. The No-Poo does not make your hair fall out more easily, but less.

When you stop shampooing, your sebaceous glands and hair root cells will all return to their original healthy state, and your hair will become thicker and stronger, making it harder to shed.

Q&A: Is it true that the No-Poo can reduce gray (white) hair?

As I mentioned earlier, I’m around 50 years old, but I don’t have any gray hair yet. So I would assume it is costly and unsuitable for your scalp to keep on dying your gray hair.

My husband started the No-Poo later than I did, and he comes from a family of gray hair, so he has gray hair, but his hair is still full.

Q&A: Can I use styling products (waxes, etc.) while No-Pooing?

Foam and liquid styling products can be removed by just washing with hot water, but hard waxes are difficult to remove.

So, to be honest, the No-Poo method and wax do not go well together. If you can, I recommend changing to a styling product that can be easily washed off with the No-Poo.

We have tried various Japan-made products, but we did not like styling products that leave ingredients on our hands, so we now use John Masters Organics styling products made in the U.S. and are well known for organic products.

I recommend this product because it comes off easily even with the No-Poo and is gentle on the skin since it uses natural herbs and ingredients. I think I have already used more than five bottles and will continue to use this product for a long time to come.

Its price is a bit high, but it lasts for a long time even if two people use it, so I think the cost is not different from ordinary styling products.

Q&A: I have straightened my hair, and can I still wash with the No-Poo?

I have curly hair, which curls especially when raining, so I have been straightening my hair. However, I don’t have any particular problem with washing my hair without shampoo, so I think it’s okay.

According to Dr. Utsugi’s and Dr. Yamaguchi’s books, you can reduce frizzy hair if you don’t straighten your hair and just applying the No-Poo all the time.

However, in my case, I got frustrated during the rainy season and ended up straightening my hair before I could feel the effectiveness of the No-Poo… But this year, I am trying my best to achieve this goal.

How to do the petite No-Poo combined with shampooing

The petite No-Poo is a method to combine washing by shampoo and no shampoo so that your hair condition will not return to the original state before the No-Pooing.

This is how we apply it in our house.

You can just wash by the No-Poo without using shampoo in the winter because it’s a dry season where you do not sweat much, but you may worry about the summer season.

In such a case, I think it is better to switch shampooing and no shampooing a day at a time according to the condition of your scalp.

This way, you won’t be bothered by the smell, and you can reduce the stickiness and the number of times you have to shampoo.

Which shampoo to use while doing the petite No-Poo

Dr. Utsugi recommends using “pure soap” and “citric acid rinse” like this when you can’t stand it.

However, washing my hair with pure soap did not really suit my hair texture, so I use organic shampoo instead.

I have tried many shampoos, but in the end, I think it is best to use a shampoo and conditioner from an organic cosmetics company called “Weleda,” which we have been using for a long time at home.

Weleda is a pioneer organic cosmetics manufacturer from Switzerland and is also known as a natural medical products manufacturer in Europe. The products are of the highest quality, very gentle on the skin, and we both like them very much.

Even though I have always been atopic, for some reason this product does not give me a rash when I wash my skin, and I recommend it because the natural herbal scent that wafts through the air is soothing and relaxing to both bodies and minds.

Be sure to wash your body directly with your hands, not with a hand towel, and rinse gently with a lukewarm shower. Don’t rub your body with a towel or take too much hot water shower. Too much hot water will wash away the sebum from your body.

In fact, it is recommended to wash everything without soap, but that is not possible, so I wash only sensitive body parts with pure soap.

At least, it is better to use pure soap or Weleda’s organic body shampoo instead of commercial body shampoo full of surfactants.

Wash your face with only lukewarm water

I don’t use any soap on my face either and just wash it with lukewarm water.

As I explained, I used to suffer from atopic dermatitis. Still, since I started washing my face with lukewarm water and no soap, I don’t have any dermatitis symptoms anymore.

As for makeup, I only use eye makeup and lipstick now, so I just wash my face lightly with lukewarm water in the morning and evening without using soap or cleanser, which can cause dryness.

I bought a type of eye makeup that comes off with just lukewarm water. I don’t use any lotion or creams either.

The so-called Utsugi method of skincare (skin fasting) has improved my atopic and sensitive skin since I started about 10 years.

I have been fasting for nearly 10 years, and my atopic skin is now completely healthy. Here, I will explain in detail the Utsugi method of skincare or skin fasting.

How to apply skin fasting

When you wash your face, make a cup-like shape with both hands and fill it with lukewarm water. Make sure the water is lukewarm and not too hot, then slowly bring your palms close to your face and place them on the skin.

Then, move your hand away from your face. Repeat the process of bringing your palm filled with lukewarm water close to your face and releasing it three to four times.

Continuously repeat the method on each part of your face, such as the nose, right cheek, left cheek, forehead, right eye, left eye, mouth, and chin. Don’t scrub your face too hard! Be gentle and slow.

When you have finished washing, press the towel lightly against your face to remove the water. Again, be careful not to rub your face too hard.

What is mirror shine polish (high shine polish) for leather shoes?

“Mirror shine polish” is an optional step after the leather shoes have been cleaned and polished with a leather nourishing cream.

Only the toe and heel areas of the shoes are polished to a mirror-like shine using a special oil-based high shine wax.

There are only four simple tools used for mirror polishing leather shoes.

Tools used for mirror polishing (1) Wax

The wax used for polishing contains wax as its main ingredient. Wax is used to coat the surface of the leather to create a glossy shine.

When the wax is applied in layers and then polished, it becomes a mirror-like shine.

However, since wax is the main ingredient, solid and not creamy, it must be applied while adding some water.

There are many types of waxes used for mirror polishing, but here are three typical waxes.

Saphir Beeswax

Saphir Beeswax is an easy-to-use, reasonably priced, and popular wax for mirror polishing.

Saphir is overwhelmingly favored by many leather brands and shoemakers around the world.

Since we don’t do that much mirror shine polishing at home, we only bought one wax for the polish, and after a lot of Googling, we decided on “Saphir Noir Mirror Gloss,” which I will introduce later.

However, when I looked it up later, I found that

Saphir Noir Mirror Gloss is difficult to use because the wax is a hard type.

I’ve seen many comments that it is not easy to use.

For this reason, we recommend the typical shoe care brand “Saphir Beeswax”, especially for beginners.

M.Mowbray High Shine Polish

The third one I’d like to introduce is M. Mowbray High Shine Polish.

As you can see in this article, we mostly use shoe tools from the Italian brand “M. MOWBRAY” for shoe polishing.

The reason for this is because I bought an M. Mowbray shoe polish starter set first and became a fan.

“M. Mowbray is a great brand that preserves tradition and quality by following the traditional recipes of skilled craftsmen.

Even though it is a well-established brand, its overall price is more reasonable than Saphir.

Tools for Mirror Polish (2) Water

After spreading the wax evenly, polish the shoes with a cloth soaked with “water” prepared in a suitable container.

The reason for polishing the shoes with water is that if you polish the wax with the cloth alone, the cloth will rub off the wax and damage the shoes.

Wax is oil-based and doesn’t mix with water, so you cannot mix wax with water to polish.

Many people put the water in a dispenser called a “push down pump dispenser.”

It’s convenient because you just have to press the head lightly, and a fixed amount of water comes out.

But I use a shallow container with water in it since I don’t have a push-down pump dispenser.

Tools for mirror polishing (3) Cloth

To polish leather shoes, dip a small amount of water in a cloth and polish the wax to make it shine.

You can use ordinary cotton cloths, but flannel cotton cloths are softer and may be used to polish the wax gently without damaging your shoes.

We have extra eyeglass wiping cloths at home, and I use these because their texture is soft.

If you don’t have one, you can use a piece of cut-out T-shirt.

Tools for mirror polishing (4) Horsehair brush

“If you’re a serious shoe polisher, you probably already have a horsehair brush.

A horsehair brush is used to even out the mirror polished and unpolished areas after applying a layer of wax and polishing with water.

5 Steps for Mirror Polish of Leather Shoes

This is the order in which you polish leather shoes.

 STEP 1 Place a shoe keeper in the leather shoes and shape the shoes

When you polish your shoes, the first step is to put a “shoe keeper” in the leather shoe to shape it.

It would be best to put a shoe keeper in the shoes before mirror polishing because putting the shoe keeper will stretch out the wrinkles on the shoes, making it easier to apply wax.

This is the recommended wooden shoe keeper that I love to use. I highly recommend this wooden shoe keeper, which is outlet priced but has the same quality as famous manufacturers.

 STEP 2 Repeat the waxing process several times

The next step is to apply the wax.

Make the first layer of wax

First, take a small amount of wax on your finger and spread it evenly over your toes and heels thinly and gently. This is the first layer.

Only the toes and heels need to be mirror polished because wrinkles form in the areas where the foot bends when wearing shoes, and wax will cause these areas to crack.

The wax in a candle tends to crack when it hardens, right? It’s the same principle. In our house, we use mirror shine polish only on our toes but not heels for no particular reason.

I use my fingers to apply the wax because I have tried using a cloth, but it doesn’t work well with the wax and doesn’t give a uniform finish.

However, I don’t want to apply the wax directly with my fingers because of the smell, so I use disposable gloves.

You can try applying it with your fingers or using gloves, depending on your preference.

If the wax is too hard or too soft, it won’t work, so try to adjust the softness.

After applying the first layer, make the second layer for the other foot. While you are doing this, the first layer of wax on the first foot will dry.

Making the second layer of wax

After spreading a thin layer of wax on the left foot and the right foot and letting it dry, apply the second layer.

If you wax several pairs of shoes at once, they will be completely dry by the time you apply the second layer on the first shoe, so it might be a good idea to polish with wax several pairs of shoes instead of just one.

If this is the first time you polish your shoes to a mirror shine polish, repeat this process about five times. If your shoes have been mirror shine polished several times before, about three times is enough.

Finally, let it dry for about five minutes to get a complete layer of wax.

 STEP 3 Put a drop or two of water on the wax

After a layer of wax has been applied, take a few drops of water on your fingertip and let fall on the waxed surface.

At this point, you can soak the cloth with water and wipe it off without putting water drops on it, but we do it this way because it works better if you put water drops on the shoes first.

Professional shoe polishers also do it this way.

 STEP 4 Polishing the wax with a cloth

It’s time for the critical wax polishing process.

Using a cloth, polish the wax with a drop of water. Adding water to the wax makes it more flexible and easier to polish. As soon as you feel friction while wiping, add water as needed.

If you use too much water, it will become difficult to polish, so it is better to keep the entire surface just slightly damp.

This process takes a lot of patience and time, but it will gradually become glossy and shiny as you slowly and gently polish them.

 STEP 5 Use a horsehair brush to even out the surface with other parts

Finally, brush lightly with a horsehair brush to make the mirror-polished part and other parts even.

You can also use a cotton ball to lightly even out the surface.

Mirror polishing is complete!

Now your effort has been paid off, and the mirror shine polish is complete!

8 tools to use for shoe polishing brown leather shoes

These are 8 tools you should have when caring for your brown leather shoes.

I will explain each shoe polishing tool in detail later on.

The leather shoes I will be cleaning are these brown Regal deck shoes.

How to care for brown leather shoes

The cleaning procedure for brown shoes is basically the same as that for black leather shoes. However, with these shoes, the white rubber sole is quite dirty, so the process of removing dirt from the rubber sole is included.

I will explain each step while explaining the tools used.

STEP 1　Put a shoe keeper in the leather shoes and shape them

Put a shoe keeper in your leather shoes to shape them and if you are not using a shoe keeper, put a piece of soft paper in your shoe and shape it.

This is the reason why we use a shoe keeper.

It is better to use a shoe keeper for any kind of leather shoes, but leather shoes are particularly quite expensive, so it is highly recommended to use a shoe keeper to make them last longer.

In particular, the appearance of leather shoes is affected when they lose their shape and become wrinkled. Once wrinkles form, they can’t be repaired well, and as they dry out, they can crack.

For this reason, it is always better to keep a shoe keeper in your leather shoes to keep them looking good and to keep the leather in good condition.

Shoe keepers make it easier to remove dust and dirt from the shoes because the wrinkles in the shoes are stretched out, making it easier for the shoe cream to penetrate the leather.

Therefore, if you don’t have a shoe keeper, you can use a piece of paper to roll up or something similar in your shoes and keep the shape of the shoe clean so that you can take care of them properly.

There are many types of shoe keepers, from expensive wooden ones to cheap plastic ones!

Wooden shoe keepers are recommended for men’s leather shoes and business shoes, like the deck shoes in this case.

In our house, we use plastic shoe keepers for women’s pumps.

Wooden shoe keepers are also readily available at a reasonable price, and once you buy one, you can use it for a long time, so it’s a good idea to have as many as you need.

If you’re particular about your shoe keepers, you can’t go wrong with the popular “Sleipnir” shoe tree.

STEP 2  Remove dust and dirt from leather shoes with a horsehair brush

Here is the actual procedure for cleaning your shoes. First, gently brush your leather shoes with a horsehair brush to remove dust and dirt from the shoes.

Horsehair brushes come in a variety of colors, including black, white, and brown.

Horsehair brushes are used to remove fine dust, dirt, and other dry dirt from leather shoes because horsehair has fine and flexible bristles.

It is useful to have one because it can be used for leather shoes as a dust remover and mouton, faux leather, and suede shoes.

A horsehair brush and a pig bristle brush used after this are similar, so it would be easier to understand if you mark the handles like this with tape.

Brushing the leather shoes thoroughly to remove dirt will allow you to spread the leather cream evenly afterward.

It also prevents dust from sticking to the shoes and causing the leather to crack due to moisture. You may think that you can skip this step, but step 2, dusting, is actually essential.

Usually, it is better to remove the shoelace before brushing, but this time I just cleaned them as they were.

The horsehair brush we bought at home is the M. Mowbray Horse Brush. It is very easy to use and I recommend it.

M. Mowbray is a traditional Italian brand representing shoe care that is also used by leather shoe repair professionals. It has a long history and is a top brand of leather goods care products along with Saphir.

STEP 3 Remove dirt from rubber soles with “Gekiochi-Kun” melamine sponge

Since the originally white rubber sole of the deck shoes was quite dirty, I removed the dirt of this part first. Unfortunately, I could not remove the dirt from the rubber sole with shoe cleaners and stain removers.

The eraser didn’t work either, so I ended up using a melamine sponge called “Gekiochi-Kun” with a bit of water and rubbed it to remove the dirt.

If you can’t get rid of stains on rubber soles, please give it a try.

STEP 4 Remove old cream and dirt from shoes with shoe cleaner

Next, use a small amount of leather shoe cleaner to remove old cream and dirt from your shoes. Shoe cleaner is also called stain remover.

However, unlike black shoes, brown shoes may become “blotchy” if you use a stain remover.

If it does stain, don’t use a shoe cleaner, and use just a leather polishing cream. After confirming that no stains have formed in an inconspicuous area, take a pea-sized amount of the cleaner on a cloth and gently rub the entire shoe to remove dirt and old cream.

For the cloth, use a soft, thin cotton cloth cut such as a T-shirt or underwear. Again, a small amount of the cleaner is enough, and using a large amount of cleaner at once may cause stains, so the trick is to use it a little at a time.

For leather shoes, dirt and old creams will be lifted by the water in the cleaner, so you don’t need to scrub it, and all you need is to rub gently to remove the dirt.

If the stain is still not removed, take a small amount of cleaner and wipe the stain off with a circular motion.

If you still can’t get the stain out, take a small amount of cleaner and wipe the stained area with a circular motion. This will gradually remove the stain that was difficult to remove at first. When the dirt is completely removed, wipe off the shoe cleaner with a clean cloth.

We use M. Mowbray’s Stain Remover, which is popular and the easiest to use.

The mini type (24ml) shown in the image on the left was included in the starter set, which I will introduce later, but since the remover in the starter set is a little too small, I used it up quickly.

I liked it so much that I bought a standard size (60ml) shown on the right side image because it removes stains well and has no smell.

STEP 5 Apply shoe cream for leather shoes with a special brush or your fingers

After the dirt removal is completed, apply shoe cream for leather shoes. This is a function of shoe creams.

You may be under the impression that brown shoe cream should be used for brown shoes, but be careful with each color to use.

For this reason, the best choice for brown shoes is to use a neutral (colorless) shoe cream. A colorless shoe cream can be used not only for brown shoes but also for shoes of other colors, so it is very convenient to have one colorless shoe cream.

It is easier to apply a leather shoe cream with your fingers because the cream is warmed up by your body heat and softens, and some people apply it with their fingers. However, it also has some smells and makes your fingers dirty, so it is best and easiest to apply it with a special shoe cream brush.

A brush specially designed for a shoe cream is also called a “penetrating brush.”

Leather creams are very stretchy, so you only need to use a minimal amount, about two or three grains of rice. Then, once you get the cream on the brush, quickly and evenly apply it to the entire shoe.

I recommend M. Mowbray Penetrating Brush!

After this, a pig bristle brush will be used to blend it in, so you don’t have to be so nervous when you apply the cream with the penetrating brush.

You can use the brush to spread the cream easily to small areas such as the sole of the shoe, shoelaces, and wrinkled areas. Wrinkles and cracks will be improved if you nourish them with a good supply of cream.

At home, the leather cream we use is M. Mowbray’s Shoe Cream (Neutral), which was included in the starter set.

When it comes to shoe cream, Mowbray is recommended. It is known for its high level of reliability and is supported by professionals for a shoeshine.

Also, it is made with a traditional recipe and has excellent penetrating power to moisturize and nourish the leather.

Its price is reasonable even though it is a popular shoe cream and I highly recommend it. It doesn’t have much of an odor either!

STEP 6 Apply shoe cream with a pig bristle brush

After applying shoe cream evenly to the entire shoe, brush the shoe with a pig bristle brush to blend in the shoe cream.

There is a difference between a horsehair brush, which is used to remove dust, and a pig bristle brush, which is used to blend in the leather cream.

Brushing with a pig bristle brush after applying shoe cream will help remove excess cream and allow the cream to be blended evenly throughout the shoe.

Brushing also has a massaging effect on the leather. You can apply more force when brushing than when using horsehair. As you continue brushing, the surface of the shoes will gradually become shiny and glossy.

There are many different types of pig bristle brushes for spreading cream, from cheap to expensive. The best pig bristle brush is, of course, M. Mowbray’s pig bristle brush.

STEP 7 Wipe dry with a glove or cloth to remove excess cream

Finally, use a cloth or glove-type cloth to polish and finish.

Polishing with a cloth will remove excess cream and gradually make it shine. Again, the trick is to polish gently and avoid scrubbing. For the final touch, you can use a soft, thin cotton cloth cut from a t-shirt or underwear or the like to remove dirt, or you can use flannel cloth if you have one.

Many shoeshine starter sets come with glove-shaped mittens, which is very convenient because you can easily put your hands in them and polish your shoes.

 Shoe polishing is done!

The shoe polishing is now complete!

You can see from the picture that the shoes have become shiny after the cleaning and polishing. Also, the rubber sole is now white and clean.

What tools should I get to care for my brown leather shoes and polish them?

As I mentioned earlier, brown leather shoes come in a variety of shades of brown, and using different colored shoe creams can stain or change the color of the shoes.

For this reason, neutral (colorless) shoe cream should be used for brown leather shoes. It is also recommended to buy a separate pig bristle brush for spreading the shoe cream, as the black one will leave black cream on the shoes.

Also, the reason why you should put a shoe keeper in your shoes before polishing them is that the shoe keeper stretches out the wrinkles in the shoes, which removes fine dust and dirt and makes it easier for the shoe cream to penetrate the entire leather.

There are many types of shoe keepers, from expensive wooden ones to cheap plastic ones.

However, buying a wooden shoe keeper for every pair of shoes can be hard on the budget.

In my family, we use wooden shoe keepers for men’s business shoes and plastic ones for women’s pumps and loafers.

This is the wooden shoe keeper that I use. I highly recommend these wooden shoe keepers, which are outlet priced but have the same specifications as famous manufacturers.

STEP 2: Remove dust and dry dirt from leather shoes with a horsehair brush

Next, brush your shoes with a “horsehair brush ” to remove dust and dry dirt.

As you can easily imagine from a racehorse, horsehair has fine, soft, and flexible bristles that are suitable for removing dust and dry dirt from leather shoes. For this reason, horsehair brushes are used for dust removal.

STEP 3: Remove old creams and dirt from shoes with a cleaner (remover)

After thoroughly removing dust and dirt from your leather shoes with a horsehair brush, use a leather shoe cleaner (stain remover) to remove old creams, waxes, and stuck-on dirt from your shoes.

Take a pea-sized amount of cleaner on a cloth and gently rub it over the entire shoe to remove dirt and old cream.

Use a soft, thin cotton cloth, such as a T-shirt or underwear, cut into pieces to remove dirt.

The moisture from the cleaner will lift the dirt and old cream from the leather shoes, so you don’t need to scrub the shoes to remove the dirt.

If the stain still does not come off, take some more cleaner on a cloth and brush it in a circular motion to wipe off the stain.

This will gradually remove the dirt that was difficult to remove at first.

When the dirt is completely removed, wipe with a clean cloth to remove the shoe cleaner.

The cleaner I purchased is M. Mowbray Stain Remover as well as the horse hairbrush.

The mini type (24ml) shown in the left image was included in the starter kit that I will introduce later, but I used it up immediately.

I liked it so much that I bought the standard size (60ml) on the right.

A shoe cream brush is also called a penetrating brush.

Leather creams are very spreadable, so you only need to use a few grains of rice. Once you get the cream on the brush, quickly apply it to the entire shoe.

The idea of using a brush to apply the cream is a bit surprising, but when you actually use a brush, you will find that it is easier to apply the cream because it can reach the smallest of areas.

I recommend the M. Mowbray Penetrating Brush.

The brush makes it easy to spread the cream on the sole of the shoe, shoelaces, wrinkles, and other small areas.

Make sure to replenish and nourish the cream especially in wrinkled and cracked areas.

The leather cream we use at home is M. Maubrey’s shoe cream (black), which was included in the starter set.

M. Maubrey’s shoe cream is known for its high reliability and is made from a traditional recipe with excellent penetrating power to moisturize and nourish the leather.

If you want to buy a stand-alone product, the other one I recommend is the Saphir Noir Creme 1925, which has many fans among people who are into shoe polishing.

STEP 5: Apply the leather cream with a pig-hair brush

After the shoe cream has been applied to the entire shoe, brush the shoe with a “pig-hair brush ” to blend in the leather cream.

Comparing the two in the photo, the difference between horse and pig bristles is clear. The horsehair looks fluffier, while the pig hair looks harder and firmer.

Brushing thoroughly with a pig-hair brush after applying shoe cream will allow the cream to be blended evenly throughout while removing excess cream.

Brushing also has a massaging effect on the leather. You can use more force than you would with horsehair. As you continue brushing, the surface of the shoe will gradually become shiny and glossy.

One of the best pig-hair brushes is the M. Mowbray pig-hair brush.

STEP 6: Wipe dry with a glove or cloth to remove excess cream and polish

The last step is to polish with a cloth or glove-type cloth.

As you polish them with the cloth, the excess cream will be removed and they will gradually become incredibly shiny. This is the best part of shoe polishing.

For the cloth, you can use a soft thin cotton cloth such as a T-shirt or underwear cut into appropriate sizes, or flannel cloth is also recommended.

We use mitten-like gloves that came with a set of shoe polishers when we bought them.

Negative points of Renapur 1: moisturizing power is a little low

The four main ingredients in Renapur are beeswax and jojoba oil. These ingredients effectively remove dirt, nourishing, adding shine, and protecting and repelling water.

However, the main ingredient, beeswax, is mainly used for surface coating, so its moisturizing power is lower than that of leather creams that mainly contain moisturizing ingredients such as lanolin.

Therefore, it is not suitable for repairing or caring for leather left unattended, so having lost its oil content.

For dry leather, I would recommend you to use Mowbray’s Delicate Cream.

Negative points of Renapur 2: becomes sticky and not suitable for leather with excessive use

It is recommended to use a small amount of Renapur in a thin layer. If you apply too much, dirt and dust will easily stick to the leather surface, and the cream will stick to the surrounding area.

Not only that but the permeability of the leather itself can be reduced, which in turn can lead to mold growth.

Some naysayers say that “Renapur” is bad for leather. This is because beeswax, the main ingredient of Renapur, reduces the moisture permeability of the leather itself when applied too much.

To prevent this from happening, apply a little less than you think you should, or wipe it off with a soft cloth if it gets too sticky.

Negative points of Renapur 3: harder for other creams to penetrate

This is also related to the moisture permeability mentioned above. Still, because of the water repellency of Renapur, it is difficult for emulsifying leather creams or delicate creams to penetrate a leather that has been coated with Renapur.

For this reason, if the leather needs to be treated with a delicate cream, it is necessary to remove Renapur with a Renapur remover or a leather stain remover to make the leather completely clean.

The easiest method to successfully repair leather products

There are two ways to repair leather; one is to use a repair cream, and the other is to use spray paints for leather.

Big mistake to use “Dye Q spray”, spray paint for leather

Probably, one of the most famous spray paints in Japan is “Dye Q Spray,” in which the actual name is “Some Q Spray” and “Some” means “dye.”

This is a type of paint that adheres to the material and gives it color when sprayed. Well, it seems obvious now, but I didn’t realize it before using it, but when I actually tried it, I found out that Some Q is a spray, so it is not suitable for repairing small parts of the leather.

I used a 1,300 yen mini Dye Q Spray to tried and turned my black loafer shoes brown, and it was a huge disaster.

It didn’t turn brown with one full spraying, so I had to respray it a few times after it dried. But even after I used up the whole bottle, the black color still showed underneath the brown, and I had to throw it away.

Before spraying, I tried to remove as much shoe cream from the surface of the loafer as possible, but it still repelled.

In addition, the spray is rather costly, hard to cure, needs to be used outdoors, smells pretty bad, and needs to be dried for a long time, which is super annoying.

Accordingly, I would never recommend using Dye Q Spray to repair or change the color of leather products.

Columbus is cheaper than Saphir but requires a little more work

The other method to fix leather products is a repair cream, and the most popular repair creams are “Saphir” and “Columbus.” Both are famous manufacturers of leather goods care products.

Depending on the condition, Columbus uses a set of “Ad Base” to fill deep scratches and “Ad Color” for shallow scratches. However, I have seen some reviews saying that it is not really recommended because you have to mix and adjust them. Also, the Ad Base that fills in scratches is white, so if you fill in scratches with the Ad Base and then spread the Ad Color, the white color may show.

So I thought if you would mix the white with black color, the black may turn gray so that you might not get the color you intended to use. It’s a bit tricky because you also have to think about how much amount you would use.

So finally, I decided to buy the “Saphir Renovating Color Repair Cream” from Amazon, which had a good review.

Procedure for repairing leather products

① Prepare the goods necessary for repair

If you want to dilute it with water, prepare a small container filled with water. This time, I used a soy sauce container from a meal delivery service as a container for the cream. It’s convenient because you can just throw it away after use.

② Use a dusting brush or soft cloth to remove dust and dirt from the surface

If you have a dusting brush for shoes, you can use the brush or a soft cloth to remove dust and dirt quickly.

For example, at our home, we have a horsehair brush of M. Mowbray that we use to remove dust from our shoes and remove dust.

③ If there are any stained areas, use an eraser or a stain remover such as “Universal Leather Lotion” mentioned earlier to remove the stain.

If the stain is too strong to be removed, it is recommended to use a remover such as M. Mowbray Stain Remover, specially designed to remove stains from leather. This remover is a “water-based” type that is gentle on leather and has high cleaning power.

④ Put the Saphir Color Repair Cream in a container. If you want to adjust the color, add some colors.

⑤ Take a cotton swab and put a little bit of repair cream on the small parts.

Its color is reddish-brown, so I used brown repair cream mixed with a little bit of cherry repair cream.

I bought the cherry color is because I thought if I mixed it with black and brown to repair brown leather goods, I could make various brown colors such as dark brown and reddish-brown.

Red cream is also available in Saphir, but it is a little too bright, and I didn’t think I would use it as a single color. Instead, I found the slightly brownish cherry to be more useful as a single color.

The affected area is also a small section, so I am using a cotton swab to fix it.

The whitish creamy staff in the image is the universal lotion. Since it is a lotion, it is more like a milky liquid than a cream.

Mix it with the black cream with your fingers, and spread it out quickly on the surface with your fingers.

Smoothly spread it out so that the back surface is as flat as possible.

Anyway, I apply it with my fingers without worrying too much.

This coin purse is a lighter dark brown color on the outside and camel color on the inside.

A mixture of black, brown, and cherry is applied to small areas outside, and then another mixture of universal leather lotion is applied to a large section with fingers.

Recreating the camel color was somewhat tricky, but I could make the color with quite a lot of cherry and a little bit of black.

I used a cotton swab to apply the corner of this area first.

And here it is, roughly applied and drying.

The shine is already completely different, isn’t it? There is a little too much paint on the left side because I applied it roughly…

I have both Columbus shoe cream and Saphir shoe cream, which are representative of shoe creams. If I can avoid buying a repair cream, I’d like to avoid buying it.

I would like to explain the benefits of a fitness gym, along with the importance of continuing to exercise.

After all, the greatest advantage of a fitness gym is that you can perform various exercises and receive services in one place with a professional trainer.

It may depend on a gym but a variety of menus are usually available.   And they are shown in a calendar every month.

On the contrary, now I sweat through exercise, sweat in the sauna, and relax in the bath. I can’t eat food at the gym because of people’s eyes surrounding me.  Also, the gym I go to doesn’t have a restaurant in the first place.

It costs me less than when I had spent on the bedrock bath and also, I feel I am doing something good for your body while enjoying a bath and sauna!
